Marco Island, FL โ A major new project is on the horizon for Marco Island as the YMCA announced plans to construct a multi-million-dollar facility designed to serve the islandโs growing population of older adults.
The estimated $8.5 million initiative marks the latest expansion of YMCA services in Collier County and aims to create a wellness hub focused on fitness, social connection, and lifelong learning for residents aged 55 and older.
Officials say the facility will feature modern exercise and aquatic centers, dedicated spaces for rehabilitation, low-impact fitness programs, and community workshops, and improved accessibility for those with mobility challenges.
โMarco Island has one of the most active retiree communities in Southwest Florida,โ said a YMCA spokesperson. โThis new center is about giving our seniors a place to stay healthy, engaged, and connected โ both physically and socially.โ
The expansion aligns with a broader trend across Florida as communities adjust to demographic shifts driven by retirees seeking permanent or seasonal homes in the region. The new Marco Island location is expected to complement existing YMCA programs in Naples and East Naples while catering specifically to the health and recreation needs of seniors.
Local leaders have voiced strong support for the project, calling it a much-needed investment in community wellness and social infrastructure. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025, pending final permitting and fundraising milestones.
The YMCA has launched a campaign to secure private donations and sponsorships to support the build. Once completed, the facility is expected to create dozens of new jobs and serve thousands of Marco Island residents annually.
โHealth, connection, and purpose donโt retire,โ said one project planner. โThis facility is designed to make sure our community doesnโt either.โ
