Naples–Marco Island’s Building Boom Lands in National Top 5 for Construction Jobs
The Naples–Marco Island metro area is hammering home its reputation as a construction powerhouse, earning the 5th spot nationwide among midsize metropolitan regions for the highest share of construction workers.
According to newly released 2024 data, a remarkable 13.1% of the local workforce is employed in the construction industry—more than double the national average. Experts say the ranking reflects a perfect storm of factors: ongoing population growth, strong demand for luxury homes, and large-scale commercial and infrastructure projects reshaping the region’s skyline.
“From upscale coastal condos to resort expansions and infrastructure upgrades, the pace here hasn’t slowed down,” said Maria Thompson, a local economic development analyst. “Construction isn’t just part of our economy—it’s the backbone right now.”
The boom comes with both opportunities and challenges. While job prospects for skilled trades are robust, the rapid pace of development has also contributed to rising housing costs and heightened competition for qualified workers. Local contractors say the need for electricians, plumbers, masons, and project managers remains urgent, with many projects booked out months in advance.
Marco Island Mayor Robert Ramirez noted that construction’s dominance in the job market mirrors the area’s broader economic identity. “We’re in a unique position where growth drives growth,” Ramirez said. “The more we build, the more people come—and the more people come, the more we need to build.”
With tourism, hospitality, and real estate all feeding into the demand for new development, industry insiders don’t expect the trend to slow anytime soon. If anything, Naples–Marco Island may climb even higher in the rankings when the next report is released—cementing its status as one of America’s most construction-driven communities.
