Coast Guard Rescues 8 People From Sinking Boat Off Florida Coast
Miami-Dade County, FL β August 24, 2025
Eight people were rescued Saturday afternoon after their 20-foot boat began sinking about 10 miles off the coast of Miami-Dade County, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The incident unfolded around 1:42 p.m. ET on August 23, when the Coast Guard received a distress call reporting that the vessel had run low on fuel and was taking on water in rough seas.
The Coast Guard deployed a Station Miami Beach rescue crew, while Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) also dispatched marine units to the scene. Responders located the struggling vessel, which was partially submerged, and safely evacuated all eight passengers on board.
No injuries were reported. Rescuers transferred the individuals to shore for evaluation and ensured that the boat no longer posed a hazard to other vessels in the area.
Officials said the quick response highlights the importance of safety equipment and preparedness when heading offshore. βThis case could have turned out much differently if not for the life jackets and working radio on board,β said a Coast Guard spokesperson.
The agency reminds boaters to file a float plan, monitor weather conditions, and carry adequate fuel and safety supplies before going out to sea.
