Florida Makes Fishing Harder, Because Obviously That Was the Problem
Florida Makes Fishing Harder, Because Obviously That Was the Problem

In a bold new effort to make vacation slightly more complicated than necessary, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has ended online sales of short-term fishing licenses for out-of-state visitors.
Yes, you read that correctly. In the year 2026 — when you can order groceries, cars and possibly a small island from your phone — tourists can no longer buy a three-day or seven-day Florida fishing license online.
Efficiency is overrated.
Previously, visitors could hop online, purchase a short-term recreational fishing license, and head straight to the beach to live out their Hemingway fantasies. Now, they must physically locate an approved retailer or county tax collector’s office, stand in line, and complete the transaction the old-fashioned way — like pioneers, but with sunscreen.
For tourists staying near the coast without transportation, this adds a charming scavenger hunt element to their vacation. Nothing says “relaxing getaway” quite like Googling government offices between margaritas.
Local fishing guides are thrilled. By “thrilled,” we mean quietly panicking. Some say clients have canceled trips or shown up unaware they need to make a separate in-person stop before boarding a charter. Because when people book a spontaneous fishing excursion, what they really want is extra paperwork.
Of course, fishing without a valid license can result in fines that can start around $500 — a lovely souvenir to bring home alongside seashells and sunburn.
FWC officials say the change is meant to improve oversight and encourage anglers to consider annual licenses, which provide more consistent funding for conservation. And nothing encourages spending more money like removing convenient options.
So if you’re planning to fish in the Sunshine State, be sure to pack your rod, your tackle box, and a healthy appreciation for bureaucratic adventure.
Florida’s fish remain easy to catch.
The license? Not so much. 🎣
