Marco Island, Florida โ€” A long-serving public figure with decades of civic leadership on two fronts has died.

Marco Island City Councilmember Erik Brechnitz has passed away at the age of 87.

First elected to the council in November 2018, Brechnitz brought with him a deep well of experience in public service. Before relocating to Florida in 1995, he spent ten years on the city council in Decatur, Illinois, later serving four years as that cityโ€™s mayor.

On Marco Island, his influence was felt early. He joined the cityโ€™s planning board shortly after arriving, laying the groundwork for what would become nearly eight years on the council dais. During that time, fellow councilors selected him as chairman on four separate occasions โ€” a reflection of both trust and leadership within the chamber.

Beyond City Hall, Brechnitz remained active in the community. Since January 2021, he served as chairman of the Marco Island Community Parks Foundation, helping guide local efforts to expand and enhance public spaces.

In a statement, the City of Marco Island paid tribute to his service, thanking him for his years of dedication and extending condolences to his family.

Details of a memorial service are expected to be released by the family in the coming days. The city has also indicated it will formally recognize Brechnitzโ€™s contributions, with further announcements to follow.
