Marco Island City Manager Mike McNees has announced his resignation, effective September 30, 2026

Marco Island, FL – August 20, 2025
Marco Island City Manager Mike McNees has announced his resignation, effective September 30, 2026, following months of intense scrutiny after a financial audit uncovered significant issues in the city’s grant management.

The audit identified two major weaknesses: one involving a $750,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant, and another related to a $374,000 state grant dedicated to water quality restoration. The report pointed to lapses in financial oversight and record-keeping, exposing the city to compliance risks and raising serious questions about accountability in handling public funds.

McNees, who has led the city since 2019, acknowledged the audit’s findings but emphasized that his resignation is intended to ensure a smooth transition. “This is the right time to begin a transition that will benefit the city long-term,” he said, committing to work closely with city staff and council members to finalize the budget, oversee ongoing projects, and assist in hiring a new finance director before his departure.

City Council Chair Erik Brechnitz highlighted that although McNees’ contract extends into next year, the extended resignation timeline provides the city with the opportunity to conduct a thorough search for his replacement. “This isn’t about a sudden exit—it’s about creating a responsible plan for the future,” Brechnitz stated.

The audit’s revelations have stirred debate at recent council meetings, with some members demanding immediate accountability, while others call for patience during the transition. Residents have voiced mixed reactions, torn between concerns over financial transparency and a desire to maintain steady leadership amid a period of growth and infrastructure investment.

McNees’ upcoming departure marks a critical moment for Marco Island as city leaders focus on rebuilding public trust, tightening financial controls, and preparing for new leadership at the helm.
