Naples Man, Dog Escape After Lightning Sparks Garage Attic Fire

NAPLES, FL — A Naples homeowner and his dog are safe after a lightning strike ignited a fire in the attic above their garage Thursday night, according to the Greater Naples Fire Department.

The blaze broke out just before 9 p.m. on Lancashire Place. The homeowner reported smelling smoke and discovering it filling the garage. Acting fast, he opened the garage door, moved his vehicle outside, and got his dog to safety.

By the time he returned, the fire had spread into the attic. Armed with only a garden hose, the homeowner made a valiant attempt to contain the flames until firefighters arrived at 8:58 p.m. Crews from Greater Naples Fire were able to fully extinguish the blaze shortly after.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Fire officials credited the homeowner’s quick actions with preventing more extensive damage.

With lightning a frequent threat during Florida’s summer storm season, fire officials urge residents to call 911 immediately at the first signs of smoke or fire—no matter how small it seems.
