Naples–Marco Island’s Building Boom Lands in National Top 5 for Construction Jobs

The Naples–Marco Island metro area is solidifying its status as a construction hotspot, ranking 5th nationwide among midsize metros for the highest percentage of construction workers.

Newly released 2024 data reveals that an impressive 13.1% of the local workforce is employed in construction—more than double the national average. Experts attribute this surge to a mix of population growth, strong demand for luxury homes, and large commercial and infrastructure projects transforming the region’s skyline.

“From upscale coastal condos to resort expansions and major infrastructure upgrades, the construction pace here shows no signs of slowing,” said Maria Thompson, a local economic development analyst. “Construction isn’t just a sector—it’s the backbone of our economy right now.”

This boom brings both opportunities and challenges. While skilled trades jobs are plentiful, the fast development has pushed housing costs higher and intensified competition for qualified workers. Contractors report urgent needs for electricians, plumbers, masons, and project managers, with many projects booked months in advance.

Marco Island Mayor Robert Ramirez pointed out that construction’s dominance mirrors the region’s economic identity. “Growth fuels more growth,” Ramirez said. “The more we build, the more people come—and the more people come, the more we need to build.”

With tourism, hospitality, and real estate driving ongoing development, insiders expect Naples–Marco Island to climb even higher in future rankings, cementing its reputation as one of America’s most construction-driven communities.
