Planned 420-Mile Florida Gulf Coast Trail Would Connect Tampa Bay to Naples
A sweeping vision to link Florida’s Gulf Coast communities from the Tampa Bay region to Naples is gaining traction, as planners outline a proposed 420-mile multi-use trail stretching across seven counties.
Dubbed the Florida Gulf Coast Trail, the ambitious project would create a continuous corridor for walking, biking and other non-motorized travel along the state’s southwest coast. Supporters say it would connect urban centers, waterfronts, rural landscapes and small towns while boosting recreation, tourism and alternative transportation options.
The proposed route would run through Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. Rather than building entirely from scratch, the plan aims to stitch together existing trails — including well-known segments such as the Pinellas Trail and Sarasota’s Legacy Trail — while filling in gaps with new construction to form a seamless pathway.
Advocates say the trail would improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians by expanding off-road routes and reducing conflicts with vehicle traffic. It would also tie into Florida’s broader trail network, complementing other long-distance routes across the state.
According to planning estimates, roughly 40% of the envisioned trail mileage already exists in some form. The remaining segments would require coordination among local governments, transportation agencies and land conservation groups to secure funding, acquire right-of-way and complete construction.
Supporters describe the project as both a recreational asset and an economic development tool. Long-distance greenways in other states have spurred tourism, increased nearby property values and provided communities with access to parks and natural areas.
While no single timeline has been finalized for full completion, planners say momentum is building as local trail expansions move forward and regional partnerships solidify.
If realized, the Florida Gulf Coast Trail would rank among the longest continuous multi-use greenways in the state — offering residents and visitors alike the opportunity to traverse nearly the entire Gulf Coast corridor without leaving a dedicated path.
