Shark Attack in Key Largo Leaves Child in Critical Condition
Key Largo, FL β Emergency crews are on high alert after a shark attack near Horseshoe Reef left an 8-year-old boy with life-threatening injuries earlier today.
The child was snorkeling with family members about four miles off Key Largo when the attack occurred. Witnesses say the water turned frantic as screams rang out and boaters scrambled to pull the boy to safety.
βHe was bleeding badly. Everyone was panicking, trying to get him out of the water and stop the bleeding,β said one witness, describing the scene as chaotic and terrifying.
The boy was rushed back to shore, where first responders immediately began life-saving measures. He was then airlifted by helicopter to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. Doctors there are performing emergency surgery as of this evening.
Authorities have not identified the species of shark involved, but officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are urging people to avoid the area until further notice.
This is a developing story. Updates on the boyβs condition and safety advisories for snorkelers and divers in the Florida Keys are expected later tonight.
