Travel Delays Hit Southwest Florida International Airport Amid Staffing Shortages

Fort Myers, FL — Travelers passing through Southwest Florida International Airport are facing longer lines and delayed flights as staffing shortages linked to the ongoing government shutdown continue to impact airport operations.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that reduced personnel levels are affecting airline schedules and airport services. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) acknowledged that the shutdown is taking a toll on its workforce.

“The longer the shutdown goes on, the more severe the impact on our TSA workforce, who have expenses they must pay for, making it harder to show up for work when not being paid,” a TSA spokesperson said. “We kindly ask for the public’s patience and understanding as our officers are forced to work unpaid at this time.”

Travelers have reported extended wait times at security checkpoints, with some facing delays of up to an hour during peak travel periods. Airlines are also feeling the pressure, as fewer staff members are available to manage check-in, baggage handling, and boarding procedures.

Airport officials are urging passengers to arrive at least two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international departures. They also recommend checking flight statuses online before heading to the airport.

As the government shutdown continues with no clear end in sight, experts warn that disruptions could persist, particularly at regional airports like Southwest Florida International, which have fewer backup staffing resources compared to major hubs.

Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and remain patient as airport staff work under difficult conditions to keep operations running.
