A quiet evening outside a Naples hotel allegedly turned into a frightening confrontation after police say a man armed with a concealed weapon demanded a victim hand over their wallet.
Officers were called to the La Quinta Inn on Fifth Avenue South shortly before 7 p.m. on July 12 following reports of a man threatening people with a knife.
When police arrived, they quickly located a suspect matching witness descriptions — 35-year-old Guillermo Soler.
But investigators say what began as a request for help soon escalated into a serious criminal allegation.
According to police, Soler approached the victim asking for food, water and $15 in cash. When the request was refused, officers say the situation changed dramatically.
The victim told police Soler allegedly produced a concealed weapon described as a “shank” and demanded their wallet.
Faced with what they believed was an immediate threat, the victim moved away, got into their vehicle and called 911.
For that victim, police say, a simple encounter outside a hotel became a moment of fear and uncertainty.
Officers completed their investigation and arrested Soler without further incident.
He was taken to the Naples Jail Center, where he now faces several charges, including:
🔴 Attempted armed robbery
🔴 Possession of a concealed weapon by a convicted Florida felon
🔴 Simple assault with intent to do violence
Police say the investigation remains part of the legal process. The charges are allegations, and Soler is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
But the incident serves as another reminder from law enforcement: when a confrontation involves a weapon, even a seemingly minor dispute can escalate in seconds.
This is Naples — where a request for $15 allegedly ended with a police arrest and serious felony charges.
