Marco Island Police Officer Assaulted During Single-Vehicle Crash Investigation

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — A North Carolina man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a Marco Island police officer during the investigation of a single-vehicle crash late Tuesday night.

According to the Marco Island Police Department, officers responded at approximately 10:48 p.m. on July 8, 2026, to the intersection of Cape Marco Drive and South Collier Boulevard following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

A preliminary investigation found that the vehicle had left the roadway, traveled through landscaping, and struck multiple trees before colliding with a wall.

While officers were investigating the crash and attempting to assist the driver, police say the man became combative and assaulted one of the responding officers.

The driver, identified as Michael Bonfiglio of North Carolina, was arrested and charged with Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, a felony offense.

Bonfiglio was transported to Physicians Regional Hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Collier County Jail.

The officer did not suffer serious injuries during the incident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Marco Island Police Department.

Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact the Marco Island Police Department.
