Driver Arrested After Near-Crash on Marco Island

A driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after police say his vehicle was spotted travelling without taillights and almost crashed during the early hours of the morning.

Officer K. Hofmeister observed the vehicle at around 3:51 a.m. on June 20 and initiated a traffic stop after witnessing what police described as unsafe driving.

The driver was identified as 53-year-old Alejandro Garcia of Fort Myers.

Following an investigation, officers established probable cause and arrested Garcia on charges of DUI with a breath-alcohol level of 0.08 or higher and felony driving while licence suspended or revoked, a third or subsequent offence.

Marco Island Interim Police Chief Joe Belardo said: “Drinking and driving is dangerous and puts everyone on our roadways at risk. If you choose to drink and drive on Marco Island, our officers will take enforcement action and hold you accountable.”

Garcia was transported to the Collier County Jail before later being released on bond.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
