Drivers traveling across Southwest Florida on I-75’s Alligator Alley will no longer be able to pay tolls with cash beginning Monday, as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) transitions the highway to an all-electronic tolling system.
Under the new system, motorists can pay their tolls using SunPass, E-ZPass, or any other toll transponder accepted in Florida. Drivers without a compatible transponder will automatically be billed through Toll-By-Plate, which captures a photo of the vehicle’s license plate and mails an invoice to the registered owner.
FDOT says the move to cashless tolling is designed to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion at toll plazas, and enhance safety by eliminating the need for vehicles to stop or slow down to pay tolls.
Drivers using Toll-By-Plate should ensure their vehicle registration information is current to avoid delays in receiving invoices.
The change applies to the entire stretch of Alligator Alley, the 80-mile section of Interstate 75 connecting Naples and Fort Lauderdale, one of Florida’s busiest east-west travel corridors.
